Bana verilen bu sergi görevi için çalışırken içimdeki bir problem ortaya çıktı: Yaptığım ya da yapılmasına önayak olduğum bazı işlerde aklım ve gönlüm kalmış meğer. O işlerin içindeki bazı parçalar, aslında hayatın içine söylemek istediğim kendi konularımı işaret ediyor. O parçaları o işin gerektirdiği şartlardan ve zamandan çekip çıkarmak istiyorum. İngilizce'de "re" öneki sözcüklere yenileme, tekrarlama anlamları katıyor. Örneğin, "redesign" yeniden tasarlamak demek. Bir de "de" öneki var. O ise sözcüklere tersine çevirme, geriye sarma, arındırma anlamı katıyor. Detoks, desarj, dekonstrüksiyon gibi. Şimdiye kadar dedesign diye bir sözcük kullanılmamış. Bu kuraldan esinlenip biraz daha ileri gidersek, "design" sözcüğünün içindeki "de" hecesine de önek gibi davranırsak bu sözcüğün artık yeni bir yazılış ve yeni bir anlam vermiş oluruz. İhtiyacımızı karşılayan bu yeni sözcük “de-sign”, arındırmak amacını taşıyan, geriye doğru bir tasarım sürecini, tasarımın parçalanışını, yok edilişini ifade ediyor. Pemra Ataç, Burcu Tokatlı, Elif Yalçınkaya, Zeynep Oray, Ceylan Şahin, Burçak Beşlioğlu ve Elif Özüdoğru ile geçmişte birlikte tasarladığımız bazı işlere bu anlayışla geriye doğru dönüp tekrar baktık. Design sözcüğüne yaptığımız müdahalenin benzerini, ihtiyacı olduğu kadar farklı dozlarda, seçtiğimiz işlere uyguladık. Sonuç olarak sergimizin amacı, dünkü görevlerini tamamlamış bazı işleri, artık ihtiyaç duyulmayacak bilgilerden, şekillerden, renklerden, ticari sorumluluklardan arındırarak zamansızlaştırmak, yeni bilgi ve görevler taşıyacak şekilde yeniden tasarlamaya çalışmaktır. Yaptığım işler gibi aklımda ve gönlümde yeri olan, kimisi öğrencim olmuş çalışma arkadaşlarımla beraber düşündük ve hazırladık. Kişisel bir sergi değil, fikirsel bir sergidir. -Uğurcan Ataoğlu

When I started working on this exhibition, a problem came up from inside me. I still had my mind – and my heart – on some of my previous work. Some elements in these were in fact addressing life’s issues I wanted to talk about. I want to pull these out of their time and the conditions that surrounded them. The “re” prefix adds the meaning of repetition to a word. Re-design means to design again. The “de” prefix reverses the word’s meaning, winds time backwards, purifies the word. Like detox, de-charge, de-construction... There is no such word as “de-design”. If you bend this prefix rule a little, and treat the “de” syllable in design as a prefix, you have a word with a new meaning and spelling. “De-sign” is the word that fulfills our need. It represents the backward design process, the disintegration and destruction of design. I wanted to have a retrospective look at the work we have done with Pemra Ataç, Burcu Tokatlı, Elif Yalçınkaya, Zeynep Oray, Ceylan Şahin, Burçak Beşlioğlu and Elif Özüdoğru. We did the same thing we did to the word “design”, to some of our work; in different doses as needed. The purpose of this exhibition is to take some of our previous work which have completed their mission, strip them of the information, colors, shapes, and the commercial objectives they no longer need; to make them timeless. Then to design them one more time in light of new information and objectives. We gave a lot of thought and effort in this with my collegues – some of which have also been my students – that left a mark on my mind and my heart, just like the works themselves.
